How our ratings work

Every score on this site is about one thing: the espresso martini. Not the food, not the service, not the venue overall.

Where a rating comes from

• Ratings are submitted only through the EspressoMyTini iOS app by signed-in members.
• A rating is one drink at one visit. Members can rate a venue again on a later visit, but only once per day.
• Each rating has an overall score from 1 to 5 and optional scores for foam, sweetness balance, presentation and atmosphere.
• Most ratings include a photo of the drink. Members choose whether their photo is public.
• Members can post anonymously. The rating still counts; we just hide who wrote it.

What the venue score means

A venue’s score is the plain average of every overall rating it has received. We show the number of ratings next to it so you can judge how much to trust it. Where Google has a rating for the venue we show that too, clearly labelled, because it measures something different.

How city rankings are ordered

Rankings use a weighted score so one perfect rating doesn’t beat twenty very good ones. Each venue’s average is pulled toward 3.7 by the equivalent of 5 ratings, then venues are sorted by that adjusted number. The average you see is never adjusted; only the order is.

Venue details

Addresses, hours, phone numbers and price levels come from Google Places and are refreshed periodically. Happy hour details are reported by members and show how many people have confirmed them and when.

Businesses

Venues cannot buy a better score or a higher rank. Owners can claim their profile to add menus, photos and happy hours and to respond to ratings. See EspressoMyTini for Business.
